General Information and Historical Outline

A Non-profit Organization "Chrysotile association" (further referred to as "Association") is an Alliance of scientists and manufacturers established to counteract the anti-asbestos campaign. Till November, 2003 the Association carried the name "Asbestos association".

The decision to establish the Association was made at the First All-Russian Scientific and Practical Conference "Asbestos and Health", which took place in the town of Asbest, the Sverdlovsk Region, in 1996.

Professor Nikolay F. Izmerov, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Academician of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, Honored Science Worker of the Russian Federation, and the Director of the RAMS Institute of Occupational Health, was elected the first President of the Association.

The Chrysotile Association is a member of the International Chrysotile Association (ICA).

Administrative Bodies of the Association President and Executive Director of the Association

- Sergei V. Ershov, Deputy Executive Director on interaction with the countries of Commonwealth of Independent States;
- Sofia A. Shkarednaya, Executive Secretary, Head of the Sector for asbestos market investigation of "NIIprojectasbest" JSC;

Members of the Association are asbestos. mines and mills, asbestos-cement plants, enterprises of asbestos technical industry, technological institutes, RAMS Institute of Occupational Health, Ekaterinburg Medical Scientific center for Prophylaxis and Health Prevention in Industrial Workers. Any juridical person (enterprise, organization, etc.), both Russian or foreign, agreeable to the regulations can become a member of the Association.

Functions of the Association

The Association attend to the problems of the use of chrysotile and chrysotile-containing materials and products which are important for all its members, such as an increase in their competitiveness, development of environment-friendly industrial technology, and a controlled use of asbestos. The determining principle of activities of the Chrysotile Association is a scientifically validated approach to the issue of a safe use of chrysotile and its products..

Enlightenment of population constantly carried out by the Association on the basis of scientific knowledge, Russian and foreign experience, have changed the negative attitude of the society to everything connected with the notion of "asbestos". Scientific and practical conferences and seminars, wide explanatory work, and the advertisement of asbestos-containing materials on exhibitions and in mass media have also played their important role.
